When wet debris and smells are an emergency
Wet carpet pad, soaked drywall and swollen cardboard are the first things that start to smell. If sewage, a toilet overflow or storm water was involved, treat the room as contaminated and keep people and pets out. For any electrical or gas risk, call your utility or 911 before you call us.
Our 24/7 line is open for after-hours cleanup calls. Same-day response is offered when available. Until a crew arrives, stop the source, lift valuables and photograph everything before it is moved.
What cleanup includes
Cleanup is the removal and sanitizing work that follows or runs alongside drying. Crews remove carpet pad, damaged drywall and insulation, wipe or spray surfaces with an antimicrobial, treat odors and bag the debris. Contents that can be saved are cleaned and boxed.
- Removal of wet pad, drywall, baseboard and insulation that cannot be dried in place.
- Cleaning and sanitizing of hard surfaces, subfloors and framing.
- Odor control, which means finding and removing the source and not covering it.
- Contents handling, including moving, cleaning and inventorying belongings.
- Debris bagging, haul-out and a final walk-through.
Is it salvageable or does it come out?
The decision depends on the water category and the material. Clean water on a hard floor is usually dried and kept. Carpet pad and drywall exposed to Category 2 water are usually removed, and anything touched by Category 3 water such as sewage is removed and discarded, with the surrounding surfaces cleaned and treated.
| Material | Category 1 (clean) | Category 2 or 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet pad | Often replaced, carpet itself may be dried and saved | Removed and discarded |
| Drywall | Dried in place if caught early | Cut out where wet or contaminated |
| Hardwood floor | Dried in place, evaluated for cupping | Evaluated by a technician, often removed |
| Insulation | Removed if it stayed wet | Removed |
| Upholstery | Cleaned and dried | Usually discarded |
Categories reflect the ANSI/IICRC S500 water damage standard. A technician decides on site.

☎ (949) 670-0939Odor after a water loss
A sour or musty smell means something wet is still in the building. Cleaning products do not fix that. A technician traces the smell with moisture readings and thermal imaging, removes the source and then treats the air and surfaces.
If a smell returns after the surface looks fine, a wall cavity or the pad under a floor transition is the usual cause. Opening a small inspection hole is far less costly than repainting a wall twice.
Cost factors for water damage cleanup
Price follows the water category, the area affected, the number of materials removed, the disposal volume and the amount of sanitizing needed. Sewage or storm water jobs usually need protective equipment and more removal than clean-water jobs. Call with what the water touched and how long it was there, and we will explain scope and price before work starts.
Insurance and cleanup records
Photograph wet items before they are discarded and keep a list of what was removed. The California Department of Insurance says to report damage to your insurance agent or representative to start a claim and to keep a log of calls and correspondence. Standard homeowners policies often cover sudden and accidental water but do not usually cover flood damage, which needs separate flood coverage.
Cleanup in Aliso Viejo
Aliso Viejo is a planned community with many multi-story homes and condos, and a wet floor on the second level can soak the ceiling below. If you share walls or floors, tell the HOA or property manager and let them know a crew is cleaning up. Sewage spills may also be reported to the OC Health Care Agency Environmental Health line at (714) 433-6000 during weekday hours, and 911 is the number for emergencies.
Cleanup often leads into water damage repair and, when the walls stayed damp, into a mold remediation assessment. If the water is still moving through a room, start with emergency water removal. We also serve Mission Viejo and nearby towns.
Common questions
Do you handle water damage cleanup emergencies at night or on weekends in Aliso Viejo?
Yes. The 24/7 line answers at night, on weekends and on holidays. Call, tell the dispatcher what the water touched and what you have already done, and a crew is arranged. Same-day response is offered when available.
Can wet carpet be saved?
Sometimes. Carpet exposed to clean water within the first day can often be dried in place, while the pad under it is replaced. If the water contained sewage or sat for days, the carpet is usually discarded.
What do you do about sewage or toilet overflow?
Keep everyone out, avoid touching the water and call. Crews wear protective equipment, remove porous materials that touched the water, clean and treat the surfaces and haul debris away.
Will you take my wet belongings?
We can move and clean contents that can be saved and list what was discarded. Take photos first, and keep irreplaceable items with you.
How is cleanup different from mitigation?
Mitigation stops and dries the damage. Cleanup removes and sanitizes what the water ruined. Many jobs need both, and they often happen the same week.
